One on one with Erick Oduor

En av svensk division 6-fotbolls hetaste spelare just nu är från Kenya och han lirar i Lindholmens BK. Vi pratar givetvis om kraftpaketet Erick Oduor, som kombinerar styrka, teknik och snabbhet på ett sätt som gör honom till en livsfarlig motståndare för alla försvar i Division 6B Göteborg. Efter att ha representerat klubbar i Kenya, Grekland och USA förde studier honom till Sverige. Jag fick en pratstund med honom om hur han ser på fotboll, Sverige och livet.

Why did you start playing for Lindholmens BK instead of any other local team?
 I had been in Sweden for a month and always saw little boys training at the Eriksberg Krokäng field so the day I saw adults playing I got off the bus and asked the coach if I would practice with the team and he said ...no problem. The next time I came to practice...and that’s how I got to Lindholmen.

What profession are you studying for? What will you work with when you’re through?
 My area of studies is software engineering. But specifically when I’m done with my course I plan to work in the field of Computer security software integration with Linux or Windows based operating systems…kind of. I couldn’t come up with a simpler way to explain this.

What are the biggest differences between the U.S. and Sweden? Are there any resemblances?
 First the weather...long winter over here. In the US, people are a bit more outgoing and very inquisitive. Over here people go about their own issues without bothering the others which I think is a bit cool...

You tried out for a division 2 team before joining us. What team did you practice with?
 I went to Skellefteå FF in Feb 2007 after my college. The impression I had of the coach was that he had liked what I could contribute but the call never came. So I went to Kenya and chilled for a while then went back to the States. I still don’t understand what transpired there.

How do you feel about the opposition in division 6? Is it a "too easy" level for your game?  
 After last playing competitively in 2006, it was imperative that I play where I get to enjoy myself first from the fitness front then in the aspect of playing at an organized level again. I’ve never looked at the level to be easy. I prepare for all games the same way, in practice, div.6 game or even reserve games. So while I’m in the field I try to give it my best and never think much about the level of play.

How do you like the city of Gothenburg?
 I haven’t been around many places due to the nature of my study schedule so I can’t give a very definitive answer on this. I spend too much time on college.

What are your plans for the future? For how long do you think you'll be staying with the team?
 My plans for the future are that I hope to complete my studies as soon as possible. I will stay with the team as long as I could get the time to practice and participate in the games.

Do you like other sports too? What are your interests besides soccer?
 Yes, I play field hockey (landhockey) and I like watching athletics on TV. Occasionally I watch ice hockey.

Do you ever miss Kenya?
 Over the years it’s kind of slipped across my plans so I occasionally think about it.

Hur kom det sig att du började spela i Lindholmens BK och inget annat lokalt lag?
 Jag hade varit i Sverige i en månad och jag såg alltid knattar träna på Krokäng. Så den dagen jag såg vuxna träna hoppade jag av bussen och frågade coachen (Bjarne reds.anm.) ifall jag fick träna med laget och han sa ”inga problem”. Jag kom på nästa träning och det var så jag började i Lindholmen.

Vad pluggar du till? Vad kommer du att arbeta med när du är klar med dina studier?
 Jag studerar mjukvaruprogrammering. Men när jag är klar med min utbildning planerar jag att arbeta med datasäkerhetprogrammering i Linux eller Windows...typ. Jag vet inte hur jag ska förklara det på ett enklare sätt.

Vilka är de största skillnaderna mellan USA och Sverige? Finns det några likheter?
 Till att börja med så är det vädret...vintern är lång här. I USA är folk mer utåtriktade och väldigt frågvisa. Här håller vi våra problem för oss själva utan att störa andra, vilket är lite mer i min smak…

Du provspelade för en division 2 klubb innan du började spela med oss. Vilket lag var det?
 Jag kom till Skellefteå FF (division 1 Norra idag reds.anm.) i februari 2007, efter college. Jag fick intrycket att coachen gillade vad jag kunde tillföra men jag hörde aldrig av honom. Så istället åkte jag till Kenya och tog det lugnt ett tag för att sedan åka tillbaka till USA. Jag förstår fortfarande inte vad som hände där.

Vad tycker du om motståndet i division 6? Är det för dåligt för din nivå?
 Eftersom jag senast spelade en tävlingsmatch 2006 var det viktigast för mig att börja spela för att hålla mig i form, samtidigt ville jag spela på en organiserad nivå igen. Jag har aldrig känt att nivån har varit för enkel. Jag förbereder mig på samma sätt inför alla matcher vare sig det handlar om träning, A-lag eller B-lag. Så när jag väl är på planen försöker jag bara göra mitt bästa och tänker aldrig på nivån.

Hur gillar du Göteborg som stad?
 Jag har inte varit på så många platser på grund av mitt hårda skolschema så jag kan inte ge något klart svar på det. Jag spenderar för mycket tid i skolan.

Vad har du för framtidsplaner? Hur lång blir din sejour i Lindholmen tror du?
 Jag hoppas avsluta mina studier så fort som möjligt. Jag kommer att stanna i laget så länge jag har tid att träna och spela matcher.

Gillar du andra sporter också? Vilka intressen har du för övrigt?
 Ja, jag spelar landhockey och jag gillar att titta på idrott på TV. Ibland kollar jag på ishockey.

Saknar du någonsin Kenya?
 Det har genom åren slumpat sig att det blivit en del av mina planer så det händer att jag tänker på det.
