Nigel De Jong blev naturligtvis rasande och satte stopp för det hela när han bröt Ben Arfas ben på två ställen i början av oktober, endast tre matcher in i fransmannens Newcastlekarriär. Dessförinnan hade han hunnit med att snurra upp hela Everton och bomba in segermålet på Goodison Park.
Att benbrottet i kombination med Hughtons avsked i princip hade omöjliggjort den affär som fanns riggad i lånekontraktet (utköpsklausul på drygt €5m) var många slående eniga om.
Men något har tilltalat Ben Arfa med klubben, och det faktum att han skrev på för fyra och ett halvt år (till 2015) säger en hel del om hur bra klubben lyckats med att övertyga honom.
"I am absolutely delighted to be signing for Newcastle United on a permanent basis," Ben Arfa told the club's official website.
"During my short time at the club, I thoroughly enjoyed playing for the team and for the supporters too. This is a great club and I am very happy to be committing my future to them.
"I am getting back to fitness as quickly as I can and am really looking forward to getting back to St James' Park, seeing the lads again and of course working with Alan Pardew and his staff.
"During my time out, I have been inundated with messages of support from fans and I want to repay them all with good performances on the pitch later this season."
Nu återstår bara att innerligt hoppas att Mike Ashley inte gör något som vore typiskt honom när han precis gjort något bra. Som att sälja Andy Carroll till exempel.
