Finally, the loss came, waiting for its perfect opportunity to strike like an unpredictable ice rink. Djurgården rolled along the longest road and despite a few skids, they stayed on the track. But suddenly it turned around and, like last fall, it was once again the bitter rivals from Solna who sent the team down the ditch. Now it's time to get back on the road as quickly as possible and get ready for one of the most intense periods of the season. Because in just over a week, four games will be played, and tonight the team will have the best possible conditions to start a new scoring streak, when the bus rolls west against a weak Västerås. It can't be anything other than three points, right?

The mystery of Västerås

It puzzles both experts and its own supporters. Despite financial resources and quality players on paper, the yellow-black club has had an incredibly difficult time establishing itself in the top flight of HockeyAllsvenskan in recent seasons. This year is no exception and despite Karl Helmersson leaving his post as head coach relatively early, there have been no major changes. The team is now on five straight losses heading into tonight but is still in a Play In place, even though Nybro is threatening from below with one less game played. The result has also affected the crowd figures as only 1900 tickets were sold for the last match against Östersund, which ended in a 2-4 loss. Tonight, however, they should get some traction from a hopefully large away team. The team's top scorer is the new Canadian acquisition Jacob Hayhurst with 31 points in total. The question is whether he will be around during the spring?

Because with a transfer window approaching the deadline, there could very well be some changes, which last year could almost be compared to a Black Friday sale. Then Djurgården managed to find a bargain for defender Kalle Loponen ahead of the playoffs, but who was not offered an extension after the draw against Brynäs. This year, however, that sale seems to be gone, but if there are any changes in plans, Wikegård should probably stand in the parking lot outside ABB Arena and throw Konstantin Komarek in the bucket. Komarek would be the perfect third center (given that his personal character fits) and at the same time open up the possibility of moving Costmar out to a wing, or giving Weigel more freedom to find his game again.

Dare to shoot, tough to score.

After the derby on Wednesday, questions were raised about the team's offense, as Djurgården only managed one goal on 35 shot attempts. And even if Viktor Brattström had a good day at work together with his goal cage, it is possible to discuss the efficiency of the outcome. Then the dividend is usually higher in normal cases, but as we approach the run-up to the final sprint in the series, we can coldly expect that all teams will clog their defense even more, and increase the coverage of our top players who will be the difference in tight games. But it also increases the demands on our "bottom six" players, even if they get less ice time. Anton Frondell did where he could and got three shots on goal, despite only 5 minutes of playing time. He should therefore expect to be part of one of the chains tonight when more players are rumored to miss the game.

August Berg looks to stay home in Stockholm and it also seems that both Costmar and Axelsson are hesitant to play, which means that Eric Nilsson may be tested as a center. Max Krogdahl was given limited playing time on Wednesday, it is unclear whether it was intentional or not, but Mattias Hävelid's debut at least bodes well for the future. The new signing logged over 20 minutes of ice time, had four shots on goal and showed great mobility in his offensive game, even though he sometimes overworked certain situations. In goal, it might be time to give Andrén a chance and give Hävelid a day off after four straight starts. It seems that there will be regular changes in the squad and we will find out how the team is formed on matchday, as usual.

On the topic of whining

In the NHL, it is relatively common for the clubs' own media departments to report directly from training to tell you about the back pairings/chains, absent players, and who is likely to start in goal in the next game. It can of course be a question of resources, but on the other hand, they know the value of building and owning their own story, which will become even more important in the future, to stand out from the noise. Therefore, it would be desirable for Djurgården Hockey to follow suit to make information about the team more accessible. It certainly does not have to be on the same level as football's "DIF Inifrån", which can almost be too intimate, but if the hockey section is to take another step in building more interest, a couple of pre- and post-match interviews where players and managers mostly say the same things is not enough. And even though "Wikegård informs" works as a decent channel to get some brief info about the business in broad strokes, I think it will take a completely different type of coverage in the future to get even more supporters and potential investors to open their eyes to the ice warriors. In a playoff game, there is of course every understanding that you want to cover up certain things and not give your opponents any advantages, but honestly, what does that matter in a 52-game regular season? It should rather be in Djurgården's own interest to own the communication to the greatest extent possible to its members, supporters and other stakeholders in order, together with the collective journalist coverage, to create even greater interest and build the sport as a whole. It may sound a bit whiny, but hey! We actually meet Västerås today.

Pack your punches!

The round offers several interesting matches where Kalmar continues to look towards a top four place and is visited tonight by third-place Björklöven, who seem to have picked up steam again after a tough time. At the same time, Oskarshamn make the trip to Stockholm to face AIK and try to catch up with their Småland neighbours. In Dalarna, we hope that Mora can make life miserable for SSK, which would give us a little much-needed breathing space regardless of our outcome in Västerås. Because tonight, an unpleasant feeling has set in. It is precisely the combination of derby cod, absent players and a Västerås that wants to break its losing trend, which reinforces the image that it could be extra slippery in ABB Arena. Therefore, we hope that the winter tires are properly screwed on and the spikes packed in when there is another warning of icy conditions.
