Säsongens första bortamatch går av stapeln i Burslem
0-1 slutade premiären mot Peterborough men det var inte så illa som vi hade fruktat, de flesta experter var ense om att vi inte förtjänade att förlora men det var vår oförmåga att göra mål och förmåga att släppa in mål som fällde oss igen. Selles spel innebär en högre press och ett intensivare spel över hela planen, det kommer att ta ett tag innan spelarna har vant sig och fått upp konditionen i vissa fall. I lördags orkade vi inte hela matchen men spelet såg mycket bättre ut än vad det gjorde under vår förre tränare. Selles efter matchen: “We don’t like the feeling of losing of course, and we need to change that trend. But I am positive with the performance that my team put together, with the challenges that we have had in the last five weeks. We saw a team that wants to be protagonists in the game, that wants to be intense. We created some situations straight before we conceded where we had a chance to make it 1-0. I think you can see the team that we want to be. We need to defend that cross better for the goal and we needed to take our chance just before that too… but we showed the fans some speed and tempo. I know we didn’t get the result today, but we are growing. We are not passive. We are not a team that will wait to see what the opponent does… we want to put pressure from the very beginning, with and without the ball.”
I tisdags var det så dags för Carabao-cup och bortamatch mot Millwall, hemmalaget mönstrade nästan samma lag som slog Middlesbrough I helgen med 1-0 medan The Royals hade åtta nya spelare från start, 19-årige Nelson Abbey var lagkapten för laget med en medelålder på 21 år. Vi trodde inte på seger, vi hade inte vunnit en match sedan slutet på februari och senaste bortavinsten kom I November, men det skulle bli kul att se vad ungdomarna skulle hitta på och vi blev verkligen inte besvikna… Seger med 4-0 efter två mål av Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan i början av båda halvlekarna, Savage satte en frispark och Camara avslutade målskyttet. Vi var det bättre laget matchen igenom och man hade verkligen anammat Selles idéer på hur det ska se ut, akademitränaren Noel Hunt måste också få mycket beröm för det här var mest hans grabbar och akademin har spelat ett helt annat spel än vad a-laget har gjort de senaste åren. Selles efter segern: “They have been working really hard, they now understand what we demand, and it was a big, big effort today. They want to do things. Without their effort, we cannot do it. All the merit is for them, because they did a fantastic job today. I am very pleased, but I am not surprised – because I know they can do it. We want to be energetic. We knew we would get chances if we were vertical in attacks, high in the pitch and applying pressure. We have a really good dressing room that wants to do things together. It was a pleasure to see them running, fighting, playing, scoring, celebrating. Putting themselves on the line to save some goals. I’m happy for that and hopefully we can repeat that kind of performance. We are a team that are going to go for it. Some days we will not be as happy as today, but some days will be like today where we show we are very difficult to beat and that we are a team that wants to make things happen – put speed and high tempo into the game.”
Nu är det Port Vale på bortaplan som gäller, ett lag vi inte har mött sedan vår senaste säsong I League One 01/02 då vi vann båda matcherna med 2-0. Selles har kanske fått lite att fundera på efter tisdagen men förmodligen går han tillbaka till startelvan från I lördags även om mittbacksduon Bindon/Abbey imponerade stort mot Millwall men nu blir det troligen Holmes ihop med Dean kanske. Kelvin E har startat båda matcherna och kanske vilas från start, frågan är vem som kan ta Hans plats bredvid Carroll, Vickers imponerade I sitt inhopp I lördags och visade I tisdags att han inte direkt är en blyg 18-åring. Det blir kanske mest intressant att se vem som får stå I mål efter veckans värvning av Button. Selles tycker bara att det är trevligt att ta ut laget: “I love that that is a challenge right now! That means that we have a good squad; that is not easy to build. It means that we have a lot of young players that are ready to step up and take some responsibility. We played some pre-season games and those boys and gave some good games to hard opposition, above our level. I knew they were capable of this. So the level of performance at Millwall didn’t surprise me – the level of productivity, perhaps! But I know that my boys have been working together, playing together, and know exactly what to do. From that organisation, they can do great things. They have showed the level to me, and I am not going to expect anything below that level from now for the rest of my time as Reading manager. “
Jag vet inte mycket om Port Vale men efter premiärens 0-7 smäll mot Barnsley så blev det seger mot Fleetwood i cupen, nyförvärvet Chislett från AFC Wimbledon gjorde två mål och och inlånade walesaren Joshua Thomas (Swansea, 19 mål på 16 matcher för U21) gjorde det tredje målet. Förra säsongen slutade laget på artonde plats, fyra poäng över strecket. Tränaren i Port Vale, Andy Crosby, har varit assisterande tränare i Reading när vi hade Nigel Adkins vid rodret.
